This position is responsible for providing efficient, accurate and thorough field locates for the identification and protection of public works sanitary sewer, storm sewer, water main and lateral infrastructure.
Assistance to DPW street crews with snow removal from city sidewalks, crosswalks, and stairs during the winter months.
Work is performed under moderate supervision, subject to review to insure proper work performance.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs field locates for existing City infrastructure using GIS software
Responds to emergency call-ins related to locating City infrastructure
Maintains equipment, vehicles, and supplies
Participates in on-call rotation for emergence locates
Maintains regular punctual and predictable attendance, works overtime and extra hours as required
Shovels and blows snow from City sidewalks, crosswalks, and stairs
Operates light duty equipment, including skid steers and small tractors
Investigates and responds to property complaints
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
Updates and maintains records, maps, and other pertinent information
Evaluates existing pavement and underground utility conditions
Works on a survey field crew as a rod person/assistant
Responds to neglected sidewalk complaints.
Ensures compliance with City and State specifications
Chips brush with forestry crew
Assists with street patching
Assists with stormwater facility maintenance
Assists sanitation and other operations crews
Performs minor maintenance, cleaning, and repair
Performs other work tasks as assigned
Typical Qualifications
An Associate Degree in Engineering, or related field experience in utility locating, or construction; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
Knowledge of the principles, practices, materials, and methods of public works construction
Ability to read, interpret and understand construction plans, specifications, and records
Ability to maintain and prepare accurate records and reports
Ability to understand and carry out oral and/or written instructions
Ability to work and make decisions under limited supervision
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public, and to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner
Valid driver's license, good driving record and the ability to drive a car or light truck
Ability to read and understand street maps and directions
Thorough knowledge of precautions necessary to work safely in and around vehicular traffic
Ability to properly barricade work sites in accordance with the City of Appleton Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) Manual and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards
Knowledge in the types and uses of common hand tools
Skill in the operation of computer equipment, including GIS and Microsoft applications
Ability to perform minor equipment repairs
Ability to perform tasks on a regular basis, which require frequent standing, climbing, lifting, reaching, bending, squatting, and carrying
Ability to withstand a variety of temperatures
