POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION: Head Start Teacher LOCATION: Head Start Building POSTING DATE: CLOSING DATE: SALARY: Negotiable based on experience PAY GRADE: REPORTS TO: Head Start Manager DEPARTMENT: Education & Career Services DIVISION: Tribal Administration EMPLOYMENT: 42 Weeks/Year (HS School Year) HOURS/WEEK: 40 Hours per Week Every employee of Stockbridge-Munsee Community is expected to present themselves in a professional manner to customers as well as other departments.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES This position will plan and implement educational programs for three- and/or four-year old children which will reflect sound development practices and will be inclusive of the children’s own heritage.
This position is responsible to complete/assist the assigned components of the Head Start Program Performance Standards and Regulations.
This is a non-exempt position.
Continuation of position is contingent upon funding allocations.
STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS All employees of Stockbridge Munsee Community must meet the following qualification: 1.
Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug and health screening.
2.
Must be at least 21 years of age 3.
Must maintain an acceptable departmental attendance record 4.
Must be able to work weekends, nights and holidays 5.
Must obtain and maintain Elder/Youth License DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Build an understanding of the Head Start program by communicating its philosophy, mission, and services to staff, families, and the community.
Prepare daily detailed classroom plans incorporating the following domains of early learning and development; physical, health, social, emotional, approached to learning, language, literacy, mathematics, science, and creative arts expression, logic & reasoning, social studies with a strong emphasis on the children’s own cultural heritage.
Implement daily classroom curriculum plans utilizing current curriculum for Head Start and carry out activities with support staff by helping children acquire meaningful content knowledge; ensuring that learning experiences are based on information that is current, accurate, and focused at the children’s level of understanding.
Foster children’s curiosity, engagement, reasoning, and problem solving by providing a balance of open-ended exploration, peer-guided inquiry, structured activities, and play Conduct individual child development pre-screening’s and post screenings.
Monitor children’s progress per the goals developed by staff, parents, and specialists, including those in IEP’s, by observing and documenting children’s play, conversations, routines/schedules, work samples and through conversations with families.
Offer families opportunities to increase their child observation skills by providing written and verbal information and encouraging participation in classroom and family education activities.
Meet federal, state, and program documentation requirements by maintaining accurate, objective, complete, timely, and well-organized child and family records Assist with duties identified in the Head Start Program Performance Standards and Regulations which include Parent Involvement, Health, Safety, Nutrition and Transition activities.
Provide transportation for children either to their home, school or child care at mid-day and/or the end of the school day.
Act as child/family advocate at Parent Meetings as needed/required.
Conduct parent conference three (3) times per year in the form of home visits/center visits and parent-teacher conferences.
Help the Head Start program achieve its goals by staying informed of pertinent day-to-day activities and adjusting own work accordingly.
Advance program practice by promoting a positive working environment and working collaboratively with other staff to understand and support the adoption of best practices for children, families, and staff.

HEAD START STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS All Head Start team members must meet the following qualifications: Build an understanding of Center program by communicating its philosophy, mission, and services to staff, families, tribal leaders and the community.
Support day-to-day program operations and maintaining compliance with all Federal Office of Head Start (OHS); Performance Standards (HSPS); State of Wisconsin, Department of Children and Families (DCF); State of Wisconsin Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), Tribal, and local policies, and procedures.
Acts a back-up for all program positions including van/bus driver in the event of staff absences.
Assist team in conducting home visits, orientation, and Parent/Teacher Conferences.
Maintain current program knowledge by examining program-related materials and current research related to developments in early childhood programs.
Support the implementation of programmatic short- and long-term goals to support service delivery and to support continuous quality improvement.
Network and coordinate services with other Tribal programs, County, State, Private, and Federal agencies.
Collaborate with community partners to foster comprehensive community services and transition to district services for children and families for assistance in the identification children who may require referral for special services.
Facilitate transitions from Center to home, and/or other early childhood education services including necessary accessing therapies, education and Kindergarten as appropriate.
Advance program practice by promoting a positive working environment and working collaboratively with other staff to understand and support the adoption of best practices for children, families, and staff.
Assist in achievement of program goals by remaining informed of pertinent day-to-day activities and adjusting own work accordingly.
Practice and model for colleagues, excellent customer service skills at all times which include, but not limited to, addressing family, partner and employee needs courteously and promptly.
Adhere and conform to all tribal law and departmental personnel policies and procedures to the best of their abilities.
Upon request, satisfactorily complete additional exam or other testing requirement(s) to determine skill proficiency.

HEAD START STANDARD PHYSIAL QUALIFICATIONS All Head Start team members must meet the following physical qualifications: Frequently sit, bend/stoop, squat, carry and lift up to fifty (50) pounds; occasionally stand, walk, crouch, kneel, balance, and push and pull.
Must be able to spend time out-of-doors in both summer and winter months, Must be able to use both hands for repetitive movements, simple, and firm grasping.
Must provide written documentation from a doctor that a physical examination was performed within (30) days of employment and annually thereafter.
HEAD START EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS A Bachelor’s Degree in child development or early childhood education is preferred; may qualify with an Associate’s Degree in child development or early childhood education and completion of a personal development plan within two weeks of employment to include completion of a Bachelor’s Degree within six consecutive semesters.

Must be 21 years of age or older.
This is a state licensing requirement.
One (1) year teaching experience in an early childhood setting is preferred.
Ability to work cooperatively with Head Start staff, parents of children, and other child support systems in the best interests of the children is required.
Ability to develop and effectively carry out age-appropriate activities with a specific group of children is required.
Ability to maintain a healthy physical environment by following health and safety procedures (e.
g.
, following universal precautions, regularly sanitizing equipment, child-proofing environment, etc).
Ability to inform and communicate orally and in writing in diverse and challenging situations with the ability to process information effectively, identify and define problems and make objective decisions is required.
Ability to operate standard office equipment such as computer, laminator, television, copy, and fax machine is required.
Additional knowledge of smart board, iPad, and more advanced technologies preferred.
